a couple of weeks ago there was a thread here about those television ad campaigns for computers which make them actually look like something the people who we deal with day to day should buy.

I have seen them so many times that I have come up with a handful of appropriate replies for many of them:

• Microsoft:
  • "where do you want to go today?"
  • "I'd like to go an reinstall all my win95 software because I installed DukeNukem3D wrong"
• Compaq:
  • "has it changed your life yet?"
  • "yes, job security"
• apple -- doesn't have advertising
• gateway 2000
  • "you got a friend in the business"
  • "COWTECHS!!!"
• NEC
  • "just imagine"
  • "all the time you're going to spend trying to figure out why there's an exclamation point on com1"
• syquest
  • "apparently space isn't the final frontier"
  • "no getting the damn thing to work with your printer is"
• IBM
  • "solutions for a small planet"
  • "that last time i checked probably wasn't Earth"
• Packard Bell
  • {just the commercial evokes this}
  • "um can we all say "apple's 1984 video" (which was about the last time the Macintosh was successfully advertised)

Here's some more that should not be forgotten[2]:

• Intel
  • "Intel inside"
  • This is a warning label
• Demon Internet Ltd
  • "The Internet for a tenner a month"
  • "But a thousand does it better"
• Cliché
  • "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger."
  • said by a person who probably did not do much tech support.
