How can you tell if you have mail?

To find out if you have mail, first verify boiler pressure is above 120 lbs. and open the primary valve on both analytical engines. Inspect both Turing machine tapes before threading, being careful to make sure that the tapes are in the guides and that the sprocket holes are on the lefhand side. Release clutches on both cam assemblies, and set the interior comptometer to indicate "wc" as the invoked program, with the parameter list adjusted to "-l /usr/spool/`whoami`" and the brass argv selection lever all the way to the full-forward position. Full shell lever out, both process valves open, then squeeze and pull the fork lever. The vibration will be rather strong at the console position as the primary analytical engine is started, but don't worry. Continue watching boiler pressure and riding the main valve to keep within limit, but it should only take a few minutes until process termination occurs. The status counter will indicate this, but the reduced tone of the machine will be a faster indication. If the displayed value on the stdout counters is greater than zero and the termination status counter reads normal, you have mail.

Be sure to shut the main valve, grease primary and secondary cam chains, properly respool and put away both Turing machine tapes, and bring down the boiler to idling heat before leaving the machine so that it is ready for the next user.
