MPEG's not playing smoothly from CD

Ulatowski explained their problem to Bob thusly:

I have a problem with mpeg on my system. I have an mpeg video card with 2 megs on it and an 8x CD ROM but the movies still run jerky. I copied half of Terminator 2 onto my hard drive and ran it off of there and it ran perfect. Is this because my CD Rom is not fast enough? I've seen computers that run mpeg movies off of CD Rom and they run fine. Am I doing something wrong. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The the solution was explained thus:

The movie is jerky because the CD isn't spinning smoothly enough, you'll need to lubricate it, so that it operate more efficiently. Now this is a piece of precision hi-tech equipment so you can't use any old oil, in fact don't use oil at all, you need to use a mixture of soap, petrol and pure alcohol, mix this very carefully in a bowl, equal parts of alcohol and petrol add soap powder until it forms a smooth paste, then spread it over all the moving parts of your CD-ROM drive and put as much as possible into the empty spaces in the drive to act as a reservoir, then spread a thin layer over the CD. Put it in the CD-ROM drive and it should run a lot more cleanly. The soap cleans the lenses and the alcohol and oil lubricates the moving parts and creates a protective layer.
